WSB: The solution

How to save the World Superbike championship...

Right, here's a message to all those WSB rule makers: This is how to create a set of simple regulations that will revive the series, slash costs and improve the racing.

No need for extensive rule books and the loopholes they inevitably have, just three simple sections.

Section one: Eligibility.

The series would open to production motorcycles costing less than, say, €20,000. To prevent homologation specials, there must be a dealer with the same bike in stock within, say, 50 miles of each circuit. No limit on engine size, configuration – anything goes.

Section two: Permitted modifications.

1: Tape up the headlights.
2: Fold back the mirrors.
3: There is no 3. Just go racing.

Section three: Cost saving measures.

To save money and prevent the rules of either Section one or Section two from being broken, the race organizers will source and supply the bikes for each round by borrowing them from dealers at random in the country where the race is held. After the race the bikes will be returned to the dealers and the entrants will cover the cost of any damage or depreciation. No transport costs, no need for huge teams of mechanics to fettle the bikes. No need for fleets of lorries or dedicated race workshops. Sorted. At most a team would have to pay the full cost of a bike if they've written it off, but that's probably less than a set of race forks costs in WSB at the moment.

And that's about it. Yes, lap times will be much slower than they are today. So what? As long as there are good riders – and with the cost savings they could be better paid than they are today, potentially making it more attractive – there should be good racing. Private teams would have just as much chance of winning as manufacturers, far fewer sponsors would be needed and the glory reflects directly on the manufacturer of the winning bike rather than reflecting which team has spent the most money transforming a road bike into a pure racer.

Sure there might be some safety issues to consider – lockwired sump plugs etc – but all that should be easy to overcome. Manufacturers might be tempted to make their bikes even less usable on the road, and more suited to the track, but the fact they'd have to stock the machines so widely would be a huge disincentive to any attempt at selling a loss-making racer-in-disguise just to homologate it for the series.

Talk about "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday"!!

Posted: 04/08/2011 at 12:51

I am sorry whoever wrote this is a complete ignoramous..

It is riddled with impracticalities which I have no time to list here..

It is a rediculous and imbasilic suggestion...

Tape up headlights and fold back mirrors... REALLY.. I am struggling not to be offensive here...

There will always be a place where big factories will race their machinery against each other and spend money devloping their bikes and putting on the best show possible... The crowds love the hype, the spectacle, and the racing that it provides..

Fold back your mirrors and tape up your headlights... Tape up your mouth and get a reality check.. seriously.. you dont know you are born!!

P.S. I have raced at british and club level in supersport and superbike classes for over 6 years.. And spectated since I was a young boy!!.. before you question my understanding of racing

Posted: 04/08/2011 at 13:20

and you sir (Mr Annoyed), don't know that you have a 50 foot pole stuck up your butt.

it is quite plain to see that this was at least half in jest, ever heard of tongue in cheek? check out section 2.

i don't question your understanding of racing, but your EQ is another matter entirely.

Posted: 04/08/2011 at 15:02

You've done well then Mr Annoyed as i can't see a Mr Annoyed on any results sheets for the last 6 seasons in any listings !!
However your complete misreading of the article that missed the irony and tongue in cheek references completely so i'm assuming therefore you are an American.

Posted: 04/08/2011 at 15:24

Timpster. "I'm assuming you're american". Very nice darts.

Posted: 04/08/2011 at 15:49

No wonder your Mr Annoyed, i'd be pretty annoyed if i was that witless. and anyone who say "you dont know you are born" is normally old,fat and miserable.

Only comment is that it's not worth commenting on.

Oh.... I am sorry I missed the tongue and cheek tone of the email...

When I read:

"WSB: The solution
How to save the World Superbike championship..." & Someone had actually taken the time to write this stuff..... I actually thought someone had something interesting to say.

As a racer who competes I take the financial costs of racing pretty seriously..For the riders and the championships themselves. Not being part of your Sunday ride out, fair weather, fairy ass couldn't ride a bike properly if their lives depended on it crew I didn’t realise that people actually waste time posting ironic crap like this.

This weekend when you are watching me on Eurosport at Brands Hatch whilst you stuff your faces with the second portion of roast dinner putting the world of racing to rights(with irony)... know you are where you are meant to be... blogging useless, pointless, garbage, on websites, discussing a sport you know very little about.

mdesportes: What's EQ... Did you mean IQ... Well done!!...RETARD!!
And the pole comment.. again.. well done... very grown up!!

Yours,

Mr Annoyed..

Not sure how you think us useless garbage types live but i don't think we normally post on websites or blog while were eating our seconds.... are you completly insane. Our retarded sausage fingers couldn't possibly multitask while we laugh at you in the gravel on TV.

Also "fit as you like", could i get your number? you sound like a fun kinda guy. x

Just incase you didn't pick up on it, my tongue is so far in my cheek i can almost taste beard.

Mr Annoyed - Please do a search on EQ, if you have the time to write two extended comments on a post that you claim is "crap", I assume you have the time to look up what EQ means.

Mr Annoyed .. mmmn, at Brands this weekend, may be seen on the Eurosport channel on TV - not the brightest fella in the world and also angry !!
I can't see a Mr Annoyed in the entry listing so are you a Marshall or perhaps the chap who follows the racers round on the warm up lap?
Ice Cream seller ?
T-Shirts ?

Mr. Annoyed.

You have without doubt made my Friday, thank you so very very much. I am actually amazed you can ride a bike with your head stuffed so far up your own arse.

Fit as I have ever been to be honest.

By the way, just how high is your horse, and whats his name please?

Brilliant!
Finally someone who's thinking what I'm thinking.

Today's superbikes have more in common with motogp machines than the road bike they're based on. In fact, calling them road bikes is just ludicrous, you can’t buy these bikes in the shop..
I completely agree, let’s get back to basics and have the best riders win – not the one with the best team, traction control, tuner or factory support etc. That I would pay to watch!

Posted: 05/08/2011 at 11:08

Pagik = Quality post ... of course we'll not hear from Mr Annoyed now until Monday as he's busy over the weekend obviously.

Posted: 05/08/2011 at 11:20

I shall be cheering him on from my sofa and my second portion of roast dinner without a doubt this Sunday..after I have got back from my wobble around the surrounding areas roads.

Posted: 05/08/2011 at 11:42

Is Mr Annoyed going to be the next FOGGY?

Posted: 07/08/2011 at 11:06

Shit, I feel really bad for letting all you guys down.. I didn't realise that if you weren't a racer, you had to be obese and unhappy instead.

The guilt is eating me up. I can't believe I spent 10 hours on my R6 today while all you guys were doing what non-racers should. Please accept my sincere apologies.

I can't take back the number 1's I've had, Mr Annoyed, but I'm going to start by giving up being a music producer and songwriter and I'm going to take to eating 4 roast dinners a day to catch up with the good honest, obese, generalised non-racers on here.

I bet you're a laugh down the pub: "What's this?! A Joke?! OUT I SAY!!! And don't spill my babysham with your brutish stomping!"

Very fit
Loving life and biking
Can take a joke

Now go play nice somewhere else treacle x

Round of applause, no, really, you deserve it.

:)

Posted: 08/08/2011 at 09:37

Dear Mr Annoyed - Cheer up fella, it'll do you the world of good, or maybe we should all inject a bit more seriousness and misery into our lives?

I like that "This weekend when you are watching me on Eurosport..." statement, it says a lot about you, although I'm afraid the cameras don't tend to focus much on the guys wobbling round at the back of the 848 Challenge. Not that I'm trying to take anything away from your efforts, more just trying to cleanse how pious they are. We're not worthy!

Have a nice day.

I am saddened to hear that I shouldn't be biking as I don't race seriously.

I'm feeling sympathy for Mr Annoyed here - a touch screen hero amid a bunch of c**tstruck keyboard warriors.
But the prize goes to MF and his bicycles.

Just change the 1000cc superstock to the WSB.

Change the 1000cc superstock to standard show room bikes call that 1000cc stock.
All you can do to the stock bike is change the spring in the forks and rear shock & fit braided brake hoses & put race fairing on & race pegs.
Then we would see what was the best road bike on the track.
