MET Police at London Motorcycle Show to talk about bike crime

POLICE officers from the Met Police’s Operation Venice will be at the Carole Nash MCN Motorcycle Show this weekend to talk to riders about bike crime.

On a stand featuring the Met’s new purpose-built BMW F700 GS (p) and their DNA tagging spray, officers will engage with attendees, talking about how the operation is tackling moped and motorcycle theft and related crime in London.

They will also educate riders on how to prevent their vehicle being stolen, a subject addressed by the force’s ‘Be Safe' campaign, launched in June 2017. The campaign aims to raise awareness of what motorcyclists – specifically scooter riders, who are less likely to use strong security products – can do to reduce the risk of their vehicle being stolen.

Commander Julian Bennett, the Met’s lead on motorcycle crime, commented: ‘Police are working hard to keep the public safe and make the streets hostile territory for criminals who steal scooters, mopeds and motorcycles and use them to snatch valuables from members of the public.

‘We want to prevent the theft of scooters, mopeds and motorcycles in the first place so they can’t be used in the commission of further crime.

‘Our presence at the Motorcycle Show puts us right amongst riders so we can engage with them, listen to what they have to say and directly advise them about properly securing their vehicles to reduce their risk of theft.’

The ‘Be Safe’ campaign teaches that while security measures are not a guarantee of a two-wheeler’s saftey, visible devices, including locks, chains and covers, will make them less attractive to a thief.

Parking security, time left and devices that draw attention to the bike (eg alarmed locks) will also go a long way to protection your bike (and also potentially provide an insurance discount), while distinctive markings will ensure that if your bike is stolen, it is easily recognisable.
